Xiren Zhu won this year’s York EMC Services Ltd Prize.
Xiren Zhu’s final year project was “Body Water Measurement”. This involved research into a novel method of obtaining the water content of part of a human body by measuring the changes to the resonant frequency and Q-factor of a radio-frequency (RF) cavity sensor. To do this required both a good understanding of RF engineering and careful application of experimental techniques, using dielectric liquids to calibrate a prototype cavity. Xiren demonstrated these abilities very clearly, showing for example an appreciation of the need to take repeated readings and investigate sources of uncertainty when performing practical measurements. His results have made a solid contribution to an active research project in body-composition measurement currently in progress in his first supervisor’s research group, and he delivered a substantial final report. Both supervisors agreed that Xiren had done a first-class project.
Michael Arnott and Andrew Norris both won prizes, sponsored by York EMC Services Ltd, for achievement in their Foundation Year.
Xiren Zhu, Michael Arnott, and Andrew Norris each won a prize of £50.
